PROCEDURES FOR PROCESSING CEU ACTIVITY APPROVAL REQUESTS |
| A. | For each continuing education activity for which CEUs are requested, an online CEU Activity Approval Request is completed by the sponsoring department, school, or other unit of the University. The approval of the chairman, dean, or director of the sponsoring unit is required. | |
| B. | Note that "Activity Contact Hours," refers to the instructional hours of the activity itself; the activity hour is defined as 60 minutes in length. In many cases, the number of activity hours may be determined by the amount of time spent in a traditional classroom setting. In other, more flexible formats, such as distance education, the amount of time engaged in the learning process is a more appropriate measure. In the latter case, the coordinator of the program must exercise judgment in determining the equivalent number of instructional hours. Only time spent in organized instructional activities or the equivalent should be included in the calculation of the activity hours. Time spent in breaks, social activities, meal functions, and business meetings should not be included. The activities included as instructional hours and the number of activity hours indicated will be checked by the Friday Center for Continuing Education based on the schedule or agenda you submit. The number of CEU's requested will be automatically calculated based on the definition of one CEU as being equal to ten hours of participation in an approved activity. Partial units will be calculated to the nearest .05 CEU. | |
| C. | In completing the "Description of Activity" section of the CEU Activity Approval Request, note that extensive descriptions are not required, but sufficient information is needed to allow Friday Center staff to determine that the item in question has been addressed. The schedule or agenda must have sufficient information to permit verification of the number of Activity Contact Hours that have been indicated. | |
| D. | In completing the "Evaluation Procedure" section of the CEU Activity Approval Request, note that each activity approved for CEUs must have a procedure established for activity evaluation; most commonly, the evaluation is related to the objectives set out for the activity. These objectives may include, but are not limited to, changes in the attitude and approach of the learner to the solution of problems; presentation of new knowledge or updating obsolete information in specific content areas; introduction to and/or mastery of specific skills and techniques; and improvement on the selective responses of the learner. Innovative approaches to accomplishing evaluation are encouraged. Criteria for satisfactory participant completion such as attendance rosters, post-tests, or other information should be specified. | |
| E. | The Activity Approval Request is reviewed for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with criteria established for CEU activities, and is then approved within the policies outlined by the Administrative Board. | |
| F. | If the Request is not approved, the sponsoring unit may appeal to the Director of the Friday Center or the Center's Administrative Board. | |
| G. | A CEU fee of $4.00 must be paid for each person who participates in a CEU-approved activity. Proceeds from the fees are used to cover costs of establishing and maintaining CEU records. See CEU fee. | |
| H. | The CEU system has an all-inclusive registration policy. All persons participating in a CEU-approved activity must be reported on the CEU online system via a roster unless exemption for a specific group is requested in advance on the Activity Approval Request. Requests for exemptions to the all-inclusive registration policy: A request may be made at the time the Approval Request is submitted. This exemption will be approved for only one specific group per activity. For example, an interdisciplinary course suitable for physicians and nurses might include a request to exempt physicians from the registration process. Requests for exemptions to the all-inclusive registration policy must identify the specific group to be exempted and provide a reason. The CEU registration fee is waived for individuals in the exempted group. A permanent record is created for everyone who attends a CEU-approved activity unless an exemption was approved in advance. The CEU value becomes part of the participant's permanent record. "0.0 CEUs" should be awarded if a person did not meet the criteria for award of the CEU. |
|
| I. | CEU activities may originate with faculty and staff of departments, schools, colleges, institutes, centers, divisions, offices, or other units of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. | |
