MUS 101: Music Appreciation

This course is temporarily closed to new enrollments. Through a chronological exploration of style periods in Western music, this course will increase students' appreciation for the music they already know and love. Students learn to aurally recognize and comprehend the various elements of music that define style, genre, and period, and develop the vocabulary to discuss them. The course also gives an overview of some popular and traditional world music.

Jazz is an art form that is uniquely tied to social issues in the United States. This course covers the roots and evolution of jazz, the musical elements that set jazz apart from classical and popular music, and the great musicians that created this unique art form. The study of jazz hones one's listening skills, increases social and historical awareness, and provides a foundation for the appreciation of diverse musical styles.
