GEOG 120: World Regional Geography

Due to modern innovations in transportation and communication, we live in a shrinking world. Students in Tokyo meet at the local McDonald's for a Big Mac, and Guatemalans in Durham, North Carolina, can attend church services in their own language. At the same time, conflicts like those in Kosovo and Rwanda remind us of the persistent gaps between people of different religious, ethnic, or social backgrounds. Geography provides tools for understanding what makes each part of the world unique. It also addresses the ways in which different places are linked together. This course provides a tour of the world's realms to explore the physical and cultural contexts in which humans live and interact.

This course is designed to

  • introduce you to the fundamental concepts of geography
  • demonstrate the relevance of geography in daily life
  • acquaint you with the physical and cultural characteristics of the world's realms
  • explore the concept of economic development and factors in global disparities
  • examine the relationship between the physical environment and human culture.

The course requires you to read the textbook, complete weekly lessons using the text and Web resources, and interact with your classmates in an online discussion forum.
