Information and Library Science
INLS 461: Information Tools
This course covers tools and concepts for information use, including information literacy, microcomputer software use and maintenance, microcomputer applications, and networked information systems. Specific topics to be covered during the semester include:
- operating systems
- Linux and UNIX
- networking basics
- HTML and CSS
- spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel
- database concepts and creation using Microsoft Access.

Required Software
- Microsoft Office 2007. We will be using the Excel and Access programs in the Office set. You can download a trial version of Access at the Microsoft site.
- Adobe Dreamweaver (Students can download and install a free trial version of Dreamweaver to use for the assignment.)
During the course, students will be given instructions for downloading and installing several other types of software at no cost.
Microsoft Windows is the operating system used for all course instruction. It is possible to complete the coursework using a Mac, but the instructor is not able to offer support for operating systems other than Windows.

Students with credit for INLS 261 or INLS 572 should not enroll in this course. - Prerequisite: No prerequisites, but students are expected to meet NC Technology Competencies. It is assumed that students will be to be able to use the Microsoft Windows operating system, a text editor such as Notepad or Wordpad, Microsoft Word, a Web browser, and e-mail.
