Tuition and Fees

Tuition rates are contingent on action by the North Carolina General Assembly and the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. The University reserves the right to change tuition rates at any time. For the most recent tuition charges for Part-time Classroom Studies students, see Charges for Attendancein the Tuition and Fees section of the Student Accounts site.

Tuition is based on your residency status (see Residence Status for Tuition Purposes), the number of credit hours you take each semester, and whether you are an undergraduate or postbaccalaureate. If you have received a bachelor's degree, you will be classified and charged as a postbaccalaureate (graduate) student regardless of the level of courses you take.

These charges include a nominal registration fee. The charges also include a student activities fee assessed by Summer School that allows use of student health services and gym facilities. Some courses have lab fees or special course fees. Refer to the Directory of Classes for a listing of these fees and add any applicable charges to your payment. Tuition rates are subject to change without prior notification.

Fall tuition rates are considerably more than summer rates. The rates for summer should not be used as an estimate of fall rates.

Fall 2013 Tuition

Due to the fact that tuition generally increases in the fall and rates are subject to change, we will no longer list the fall tuition schedule. To see the most current fall tuition schedule, see Student Accounts and University Receivables.

Fees

The University has determined that students enrolled in Part-Time Classroom Studies and Off-Campus Credit Studies will be assessed the Educational and Technology (E&T) Fee. This fee is in addition to the Administrative Systems, Association of Student Governments and Student Information System Registration Fees that have previously been assessed. The E&T Fee helps pay for costs related to classroom, laboratory and computer lab support.

All fees will be assessed on a per-credit-hour basis rather than a per-enrollment basis. For undergraduate students, the combined rate is $16.86 per credit hour. For graduate students, the combined rate is $24.48 per credit hour. UNC employees using the tuition waiver are not required to pay this fee. Summer fees include student activity fees assessed by Summer School that allow use of student health services and gym facilities. During the fall and spring semesters, Part-time Classroom Studies students are not eligible to pay student fees that would provide an athletic pass or permit the use of student health services.

Tuition does not include the cost of textbooks. All new students will be charged a $15 fee for the UNC One Card (student ID card). Some courses have lab fees or special course fees that are not included in tuition rates. Refer to the Directory of Classes for a listing of these fees and add them to your payment.

Special Rates and Waivers

Certain members of the Armed Services and their dependent relatives may be eligible to be charged less than the out-of-state tuition rate even though they are not North Carolina legal residents for tuition purposes. See Military Tuition Benefit.

UNC employees may have tuition waived. See Employee Tuition Waiver.

How to Pay Your Tuition

If you register during the billing period, Student Accounts will bill you via e-mail. If you register after the billing period, you must pay Student Accounts first.

Methods of Payment

You may make your payment in person, online, or by mail. For details on how to make payments, visit UNC’s Student Account Services Payment Options site.
