Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver
If you are 65 years of age or over and reside in North Carolina, you can take University courses for credit without paying tuition. The Senior Citizens Tuition Waiver applies to courses taken on campus as well as courses taken from a distance (online or correspondence).
Taking Courses on Campus
To take courses on campus, you must be admitted to the University as a part-time student. See Part-time Classroom Studies—How to Apply. The application fee is not covered by the tuition waiver program.
Once your application has been reviewed and admission granted, you will need to complete a Request for Waiver form (download in your preferred format):
- Request for Tuition Waiver for courses on campus (PDF format)
- Request for Tuition Waiver for courses on campus (Word format)
and submit it to the University Cashier in Bynum Hall. At that point, you will also need to register for the course or courses you want to take. Instructions on registration will be included in the handbook you’ll receive with notification of your admission, or see Part-time Classroom Studies—Registration.
Lab fees, books, course fees, and other costs outside of tuition and regular student fees are not covered by the waiver and are your responsibility.
Note: If you do not want to participate fully in the course work or have your work graded, you may prefer to audit a course. Auditing does not require admission or other procedures listed above. For more information about auditing courses, visit the University Registrar’s Web site.
Taking Courses from a Distance
You do not have to be admitted to the University in order to take distance education courses through the Friday Center tuition-free. Distance education courses are regular college courses offered for credit; they are taught from a distance rather than in the classroom. The Friday Center offers two distance education programs:
- Carolina Courses Online are semester-based courses offered via the Internet.
- Self-paced Courses are completed at the student’s own pace and offered either via the Internet or through correspondence.
When you register, you will need to complete a Request for Waiver form (download in your preferred format):
- Request for Tuition Waiver for distance courses (PDF format)
- Request for Tuition Waiver for distance courses (Word format)
and submit it to Credit Programs for Part-time Students at the Friday Center.
