Through the Friday Center, learners from all walks of life have access to the University’s outstanding faculty, extensive knowledge base, and groundbreaking research. With your support, the Friday Center can continue to expand the reach and scope of these essential educational experiences.
The William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education is named in honor of two North Carolinians who have devoted their lives to enhancing and improving the lives of their fellow citizens through their work in education, the arts, and public health. During the 1989 Center groundbreaking, UNC President William Friday stated that “The Center is the citizens’ classroom. Day by day I hope it will draw hundreds of North Carolinians to this place for learning, for the experience of self-discovery and for the renewal of the spirit of Chapel Hill.” The William and Ida Friday Fund for Lifelong Learning is an unrestricted fund designed to make the Fridays’ hope a reality.
Each semester, the Friday Adult Learner Scholarship awards $750 to one or more part-time, degree-seeking, undergraduate students age 24 or older studying at UNC-Chapel Hill. The scholarship is named for former UNC President Bill Friday, who strove to make a University education available to all citizens of North Carolina. The scholarship can be applied to college expenses for the semester for either Carolina Courses Online or Part-time Classroom Studies. Funding for the scholarship comes from donor contributions. We invite you to read about some of the Center’s nontraditional students on our Student Stories page.
