In today’s knowledge-based global economy, the importance of continuing higher education is greater than ever. Continuing education has the power to change lives, communities, workplaces, and even our world. With your support, the Friday Center can continue to expand the reach and scope of these essential educational experiences.
The William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education is named in honor of two North Carolinians who have devoted their lives to enhancing and improving the lives of their fellow citizens through their work in education, the arts, and public health. During the 1989 Center groundbreaking, President Friday stated that “The Center is the citizens’ classroom. Day by day I hope it will draw hundreds of North Carolinians to this place for learning, for the experience of self-discovery and for the renewal of the spirit of Chapel Hill.” The William and Ida Friday Fund for Lifelong Learning is an unrestricted fund designed to make the Fridays’ hope a reality.
The Nanette V. Mengel Program Development Endowment Fund was designed to support the development of new continuing education programming. Some of the current and past activities supported by this endowment include courses and seminars in the Center’s Professional Development and Enrichment Programs unit, the Bridges Alumni Program in support of women in academic leadership, the award-winning “What’s The Big Idea?” lecture series, and course development in the Center’s Credit Programs for Part-time Students area.
