While Ackland staff is unable to appraise works of art, curators may offer insight into the significance of the piece as well as the techniques used by the artist, condition, and subject matter.

Drawing in the Galleries

These sessions provide an opportunity for the public to bring paper and dry media (crayon, pencils, and so on) and draw in the setting of the Ackland galleries. Sessions open with a brief conversation about a work of art in the Ackland, the artist who made the work, and the culture from which it emerged.

These programs explore connections between groundbreaking literature from circa 1958 and works of art on view in the exhibit “Circa 1958: Breaking Ground in American Art.” Works discussed in September will be Jack Kerouac’s On the Road; in October, Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s A Coney Island of the Mind; and in November, Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita.
