SPAN 101: Elementary Spanish I

SPAN 101 is designed to introduce you to the Spanish language and many facets of Hispanic culture, and to develop all language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Because SPAN 101 is a three-credit hour course, you can expect to devote a minimum of 10 hours a week to study, in addition to attending the weekly Virtual Class session.

In this course, you will develop your ability to communicate in Spanish in everyday situations. Upon completion, you will be able to comprehend and respond with grammatical accuracy to basic spoken and written Spanish and demonstrate cultural awareness.

Required Materials

The textbook for this course is Heining-Boynton and Cowell, ¡Anda! Curso elemental, 3/e. Access to the online interactive language lab, MySpanishLab, is also required.

SPAN 102: Elementary Spanish II

This course continues the study of the essential elements of Spanish structure, vocabulary, and the cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world. Aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing are stressed in that order.

SPAN 203: Intermediate Spanish I

This course continues the study of the elements of Spanish structure, vocabulary, and the cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world. Aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing are stressed.

SPAN 405: Intermediate Spanish for Health Care Professionals

Fall Semester 2019 (August 20–December 13)
Summer 2019 (11 weeks: May 15–July 30)

The primary goal of Intermediate Spanish for Health Care Professionals is to improve your Spanish communication skills so that you can be a better health care provider to your current and future patients and clients. Communication in a health care setting involves much more than just speaking a common language, however. In order to provide adequate care, one must also understand patients’ and clients’ cultures and their reactions to receiving health care. As such, this course focuses on improving aural and oral communication skills within the context of Latino immigrant culture in health care settings.

Additional Requirement

  • You must call your instructor and a conversation partner (a classmate) once a week, even if the calls require long distance. Each conversation will last fifteen minutes.
