As a part-time student through Self-paced Courses, you can earn college credit by taking correspondence or online courses at your own pace. All courses are taught from a distance, and no class attendance is required. The courses can be started at any time and are not tied to a semester schedule. You have nine months to complete the course work.
The institutions offering self-paced courses are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. All courses have been approved by the department offering the course. Courses originate and credit is granted from ten institutions in the University of North Carolina system (see Limitations on Credit Earned):

- Elizabeth City State University
- North Carolina Central University
- North Carolina State University
- The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- The University of North Carolina at Greensboro
- The University of North Carolina at Pembroke
- Western Carolina University
- Winston-Salem State University

Self-paced Courses is administered by Credit Programs for Part-time Students in the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education at UNC-Chapel Hill. Disclosure of information on students is governed by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
